Africa may have the Big Five, but India has the Big One: the legendary Bengal tiger. For safari devotees who think they've seen it all, CC Africa the eco-conscious safari operator is bringing its hallmarks of superbly trained guides and luxurious camps to the central state of Madhya Pradesh, home to India's largest concentration of tigers. In partnership with Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces, the first two of four planned safari camps in a tiger circuit opened earlier this year. Mahua Kothi resembles a central Indian village and sits on forty acres adjacent to Bandhavgarh National Park's woodlands. Set in the jungle, its twelve suites have private courtyards and bedrooms with wood-beamed ceilings. A little more than three miles away, close to Pench National Park, Baghvan's twelve chalets abut a dry riverbed. Each has a bedroom and its own bathroom, along with stairs leading up to a covered rooftop terrace for sleep-outs (hookah included). Of course, the highlights at both camps are the game drives to track leopards, wild dogs and exotic birds, but a sighting of the reclusive tiger is the ultimate goal. If you're very lucky, you'll see one in the bush as you tour the park atop a lumbering elephant. Two additional camps will open in December and February near the Kanha and Panna national parks, respectively. $725 per night per person, all inclusive. 866-969-1825; tajsafaris.com.
