By Faith Willinger You may not have considered joining a private club in Rome before, but now that the International Wine Academy of Roma has opened, with a membership fee of only $24 a year, you'd be crazy not to. Housed in a 19th-century palazzo next to the Spanish Steps, it is an ideal place to deposit shopping bags, relax with a glass of wine or an espresso and get advice on local events, including the academy's outstanding wine programs. Founded by Roberto Wirth, owner of the Hotel Hassler at the top of the Steps, the club is run by his stepdaughter, Valentina Morriconi, who welcomes you at reception. After you sign in, you can ascend the seriously spiraling staircase, which appeared in Bernardo Bertolucci's film Besieged. Despite all of Rome's attractions, you'll want to linger in what feels like a treasured residence. When it's cool outside, warm yourself before the living room fireplace or browse among the library's food and wine books. In pleasant weather, retreat to the garden by the Steps or to the rooftop bar. Meals are served in the library, in the wine bar or on its adjoining terrace. As is fitting at a private club, the chef will accommodate members with classics like pasta with tomato sauce and simply cooked fish, meat or vegetables. The cellar's trove of 450 labels includes gems like a Casal Pilozzo Malvasia '92. Members can stay in one of four luxuriously appointed rooms with heart-stirring views. Double rooms from $455 to $560. 8 Vicolo del Bottino; 011-39-06-699-0878; www.wineacademyroma.com.
