"Mornings are magical in the valley beside Chile's Lake Yelcho: clouds dip low to touch the cold water, and there's not a trace of civilization.
My most memorable travel experience was when a few friends and I flew in an eight-passenger plane from Puerto Montt, in southern Chile, to the remote village of Chaiten. We then headed into the mountains and spent a few days in a cabin beside the lake.
By day we fished for trout and salmon; at night we dined in a small house nearby, where three local women used a wood-burning stove to cook delicious empanadas de pino [meat-filled turnovers] and our freshly caught fish.
The meals were better than anything I've ever had at a restaurant, and the Chilean wine made them unforgettable. On my last day there, I caught, and then lost, a thirty-pound salmon. Disappointing, to be sure, but it could not diminish the great time I had."
