Authors Frederick and Vanessa Vreeland look at the Eternal City through its "layers of cultural history" and have organized their book Key to Rome (Getty Publications; $22.50) accordingly. Moving through sections devoted to four defining periods in Roman history--ancient; Christian; Renaissance and Baroque; and the grand tour--the Vreelands thoroughly cover most of Rome's major monuments and convey the wonder of its extraordinary riches in art and architecture as well as its influence on Western culture. Photos, maps and illustrations abound, along with hundreds of informative boxes, lists, tips and time lines. You'll need other sources to help you decide where to stay, shop and dine, but Key to Rome proves a highly intelligent and useful guide to why you're there.
