I will share my favorite summer spot on the condition that everyone agrees not to go and see it for themselves. Block Island, Rhode Island, may be the last, best place for a quintessentially plain and unspoiled New England summer experience. I'm happy to say that it is not for everyone. There are more dirt roads than paved ones, socks are frowned on between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and there isn't a celebrity in sight. It is for those who like buying fresh fish off the dock and rediscovering life in America before cineplexes, theme parks and jet aviation. Just getting to the island (ferryboat or propeller plane only) is usually enough to weed out the less than serious. For purists it's a delight. I've also come to love the local folks, who adore the island enough to endure winters there.
