South Africa: Raves & Reviews

At Leopard Creek Country Club in South Africa, fashion designer David Chu finds the fairways are home to another kind of game.

By David Chu

I have played golf on courses all over the world, from India to Scotland, but I will never forget my first trip to the Leopard Creek Country Club (011-27-13-791- 2000; leopardcreek.co.za), in South Africa. I was looking forward to the challenging course, which was designed by Gary Player and is on the southern border of Kruger National Park. I also knew there were going to be interesting water hazards, since the creek is home to families of hippos and crocodiles. But I didn't expect—and will always remember—my encounter with a curious and friendly giraffe. As I was teeing off, I looked up and there it was, grazing on the tops of trees. It was so tall, so magnificent—and it was right next to me. I stopped to watch the animal and didn't resume play until it was gone. I thought I had come to South Africa to play golf, but at Leopard Creek, the beauty of the location goes far beyond the game.
