This past April, I visited Dresden, in Germany. The reconstruction of this elegant city, which was almost completely destroyed during the war, is unbelievable. But as impressive as the buildings are, my favorite sight was the porcelain at the Baroque Zwinger palace. The building complex was constructed in the 18th century for Augustus the Strong, who claimed to have an incurable "maladie de porcelaine." He not only collected Chinese and Japanese porcelain but also commissioned an assortment of handcrafted, life-sized zoo animals; dozens of the creatures are displayed at the Zwinger today. Standing in the midst of these pieces, which are rendered in creamy white, I decided that this was the single most gorgeous room I had ever seen.
