From the outside, the modern and meticulously composed Aman New Delhi, which opened last fall, appears downright spartan. But inside, the hotel -- ensconced in the colonial neighborhood of Lutyens' Delhi -- offers a sublime tranquility that's hard to come by in India's cacophonous city of seventeen million.
The sixty-seven spacious rooms have been given light Moghul design touches (onion-arched windows, latticework walls) along with deep plunge pools hidden behind marble jali screens. In the evenings, a santoor player plucks gentle tunes while guests dine quietly at the casual tapas bar or in the more elegant pan-Asian restaurant.
If that isn't enough to restore you, the fitness center is equipped with a Pilates studio and tennis and squash courts, while the spa menu offers such epic escapes as the eight-hour Solah Shringar (which translates roughly as "sixteen adornments"). Delhi has been begging for a respite from its chaos, and Aman has definitely delivered. Doubles from $750. The Lodhi Road; 011-91-11-4363-3333; amanresorts.com.
