With two extraordinary courses situated along bluffs a hundred feet above the Pacific Ocean, the seven-year-old Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, set on the coast of southern Oregon, was hard-pressed for an encore when the time came to build a third course. Wisely, the resort hired lay-of-the-land specialists Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw to create an interior site that takes players through three distinct environments: dune, meadow and forest. Bandon Trails, which opened last year, is, like its two siblings, a walkers-only delight that transforms a round of golf into an epic journey. (Caddies are available.) This 6,849-yard, par-71 course cleaves through dunes, meanders across a meadow, disappears into a coastal forest of spruce and fir, doubles back across the meadow and finishes in the dunes once again. Beyond the eighteenth green is the new Trail's End Clubhouse, which offers casual dining and magnificent ocean views. The resort's 147 rooms and cottages are spread out in and around the main lodge and several two-story buildings. Groups of golfers will love the sixteen new Grove cottages, each featuring four private bedrooms, a parlor and a patio. Doubles from $180 per night. Grove cottages from $1,400 per night. 888-345-6008; bandondunesgolf.com.
