Venice's first-ever solar-powered vaporetto now plies its canals, courtesy of the Bauer Hotels, which introduced the boat in October. As clean and quiet as a gondola, the craft curbs pollution and fumes, as well as the motorboat waves believed to accelerate erosion. It also provides the most practical—if not the most romantic—way to cross the lagoon between the Bauer Hotel and its newly opened sister property, the Palladio Hotel & Spa. "I hope other people will start thinking more about how they travel through our canals from island to island," says Francesca Bortolotto Possati, the hotel company's president and CEO. "As technology grows, we should all continue to seek new alternatives to help preserve our future." Rooms from $520. 011-39-041-520-7022; bauerhotels.com.
