Any visitor to San Antonio, Texas, will likely take a stroll on the River Walk, a tree-lined path that winds along the San Antonio River through the city's downtown. Until lately, great places to stay in the area were limited, so the WATERMARK HOTEL & SPA—with its elegant interiors, a riverside seafood restaurant, a 17,000-square-foot spa and a rooftop gym and pool—is a welcome recent arrival. The ninety-nine-room hotel is built on the site of a 19th-century saddlery, and its facade is a re-creation of the previous building's stonework. Vintage photos and antique spurs and saddles in its lobby provide Lone Star flair. The modest- sized guest rooms have custom-made four-poster forged-iron beds with cream-colored upholstered headboards and white, platinum and sage linens. After a tour of the nearby Alamo, guests can escape the heat by heading to the spa, which offers hydrotherapy massages and treatments inspired by local ingredients, such as the mesquite scrub. Be sure to book a room or suite with a balcony overlooking the river. Rooms from $329; suites from $600. Spa day packages from $179; treatments à la carte. 866-605-1212; watermarkhotel.com.
