Bay Area epicures seeking authenticity are driving up Highway 1 to dine at Nick's Cove & Cottages, a former fishing shack and now a vacation community on Marin County's Tomales Bay. Built in 1931, the seafood roadhouse was lovingly restored last year by San Francisco restaurateur Pat Kuleto and executive chef Mark Franz, both of whom spent childhood holidays there and are committed to using local ingredients (shellfish caught in the bay goes straight to the kitchen).

Perhaps nostalgia led to Kuleto's decor; he eschewed polished interiors for the original wood's patina. He's also provided guests respite from the long drive home after a meal and a bottle of Napa wine: they can simply stay in one of twelve understated cabins with Frette linens and heated bathroom floors.

Cottages from $165. 415-663-1033; nickscove.com.
