On your next trip to Puerto Rico, make time to visit San Juan's Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, located in a 1920s two-story hospital that in 2000 was expanded and transformed into a striking, modern five-story building. A local artist made the atrium's floor-to- ceiling stained glass window using patterns inspired by native Taino Indian art. The permanent collection has many fascinating colonial-era works, among them several by the internationally renowned Puerto Rican painters José Campeche and Francisco Oller; the latter is one of the few Latin Americans with a painting in the Louvre. Also on display are folk art, sculpture and photography. English-speaking docents are available if you call ahead. After touring the exhibitions, explore the sculpture garden and then dine at Pikayo, the museum's excellent restaurant. Its minimalist decor and contemporary American and Puerto Rican cuisine draw the city's stylish set. 299 De Diego Ave., Santurce; 787-977-6277; mapr.org.
