In Ginza, Tokyo's upscale shopping district, GIORGIO ARMANI has just constructed the Armani/Ginza Tower, the brand's fourth concept store. The twelve-story, 86,000-square-foot edifice, opened last November, is now the tallest building in the immediate area and reportedly worth more than $20 million.
Designed by Italian architects Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas, the tower contains floors with offerings from the Giorgio Armani and Emporio Armani collections; furnishings from Armani/Casa; the world's first Armani/Spa, inspired by the ancient Roman thermal baths; a bar; and Armani/Ristorante, an eatery helmed by chef Enrico Derflingher, previously a personal chef to the Prince and Princess of Wales and executive chef for President George H.W. Bush.
The bamboo motif that pervades the building's interior was suggested by Armani himself. "As a material, it has such a close association with Japan," the designer says, "and the color scheme [black and gold] is rooted in the tradition of Japanese drawings." The black-and-gold theme has also found its way into a limited-edition range of accessories and clothing with an emblem of the Armani/Ginza Tower, among them a champagne-gold python handbag ($2,100) and a black jersey dress with gold Swarovski crystals ($4,684). 5-5-4 Ginza, Chuo-ku; 011-81-3-6274-7000; armaniginzatower.jp.
