From a distance, Mellymello's storefront looks similar to those of the other elegant boutiques lining the streets of Madrid's Salamanca district, but there's one difference: the ultrachic apparel on display is for youngsters. Carolina Stephan, a fashion devotee, opened the shop in December 2004, believing that fashionista parents should be able to find children's garments that are as much in vogue as their own. "I design grown-up clothes for children," explains Stephan, who creates two collections each year, in sizes that fit newborn babies to ten-year-olds. "Based on what I see on the runways, I adapt the styles to suit kids." The result? Incredibly original children's wear that seduces flocks of style-conscious Madrileños. This fall, balloon skirts and faux-fur jackets create a sophisticated look for las chicas, and the boys' line includes preppy velvet blazers, classic vests and even pint-sized ties. And though Stephan won't say if Spain's royals are among her upscale clientele, Carolina Herrera is, and it would be no surprise to soon see Mellymello designs donned by the first child of Crown Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia, due this month. 97 Calle Claudio Coello; 011-34-91-431-2366.
