Interior designer CHARLOTTE MOSS has cast her characteristically stylish gaze upon the world of retail, converting a landmarked 1930s town house off New York's Madison Avenue into four floors of exquisitely chosen merchandise, including antiques, reproductions and one-off items created by vendors with whom she has forged exclusive relationships. It's enough to set a savvy collector swooning.
The shop is decorated according to the floor plan of a private home, with each room offering a themed collection of goods, ranging from ceramic dishware in four colors from APT, of Provence (a soup terrine is $2,560, and a butter plate $75), to hand-embroidered bed linens by Valombreuse (a standard pillowcase set is $225, and a king duvet $645). Vintage black dresses by designers including Chanel and Versace (from $750) hang in the second-floor boutique near a sassy selection of fur-trimmed jackets created by Adrienne Landau (from $950). Among other precious trinkets are evening pouches in satin and velvet by Fortuny ($175 and $275) and a collection of one-of-a-kind pieces by jeweler Sorab & Roshi, such as a cabochon- chrysoprase octopus pin ($12,500). Fragrances from Maître Parfumeur et Gantier come in home scents such as Bois Précieux, Le Mytre and Rose Poivrée ($70 each), and perfumes Ambre du Népal and Bahiana ($170 each).
Martini lovers will covet William Yeoward Crystal's Lulu etched rose cocktail glasses ($210 each), while fashionistas will find it hard to resist a full reproduction box set of Diana Vreeland's memos to her Vogue staff ($800). Books include a first edition of Billy Baldwin Remembers ($200) and an out-of-print edition of Elsie de Wolfe: A Decorative Life ($300). Also worth a gander are bamboo- and jade-handled calligraphy brushes ($50 to $525) and a gilt-framed original watercolor sketch for an Aubusson carpet ($2,500).
Whether you're seeking something for yourself or for someone special, you're sure to be seduced.
