At Solage Calistoga, Napa Valley's latest hot spot, biking and hiking are as much of a draw as wine tasting, and dress shirts and cocktail attire are so scarce, you'd think they were forbidden.

This property from the people behind Auberge Resorts (Auberge du Soleil, Inn at Palmetto Bluff) is intentionally not a formal, Tuscan-inspired wine-country resort. Kids and pets are welcome, and the retreat was built with environmentally friendly materials.

Eighty-nine rooms are set within fifty-two agri-tourism-style cottages, built with wood siding, gabled roofs and cross bracing and scattered around the former horse pasture. The "studios" are more urbane inside, with open floor plans, concrete floors, Wi-Fi and iPod docks. Two bicycles per room are provided for outings to wineries and mountain trails. For indulging on-site, there's a spa showcasing skin-care guru Kate Somerville's facials and, in a nod to Calistoga's heritage as a proto-spa destination, mud treatments and soaking baths fed by the region's geothermal springs.

Consider it luxury for the un-buttoned-up set.

Studios from $325. 866-942-7442; solagecalistoga.com.
